Trekking to Everest Base Camp

After the long trek to basecamp, one of the first rituals of any Mt. Everest climb is the Puja ceremony. Our Puja ceremony was officiated by a Buddhist priest called a Lama in front of an altar built of stone. We made offerings of food and drink, asking the Gods for good fortune and to pass safely through the upper mountain. From a hole in the alter juniper branches burned continuously as we stacked our climbing gear against the alter to be blessed. Prayer flags flapping their prayers into the wind are strewn out from the alter 100 feet in every direction. During the ceremony, the Sherpas chant along with the Lama and monks, and everyone throws rice. The ceremony closes with the participants sharing food, and finally with the climbers and Sherpas smearing gray sampa flour on each others faces — a symbol of their hope that they may live to see each other when they are old and gray.

Camp or Petzl Helmet

I’ve always hated CAMP helmets for the terrible fit and design, but it appears the Petzl shell is in fact weaker. Is a hammer a good test of strength? Not sure, but I would estimate that the hammer head is about the same size as the rock that knocked me off the Chere couloir in ‘97. Y’ouch that was painful (actually my face absorbed most of the impact).

YEP Himalaya (June 2010) – Concordia to Base Camp

www.mikehorn.com We have walked for 9 days to be at this point. Tonight we will make our first attempt to summit the unnamed peak at just above 6000m. I can feel the tension building up amongst the YEP’s. What we have spoken about for so long now will soon be a reality. After setting up our 3 man Quechua tents at the foot of the mountain we had a short rest to adapt to the altitude. We had time to boil some water and test our new light weight Optimus stoves for the climb. After having some tomato soup we packed our Petzl climbing gear in the tent and started our trek back to Ali Camp. It was only a 4km walk but it took us over 2 hours because of the altitude. All the YEP’s are doing well. Some have light headaches, which is normal due to the altitude and discomfort due to the heavy climbing shoes and backpacks. read more on www.mikehorn.com
