ive been an avid rock climber for almost ten years…get rock climbing shoes if you intend to climb regularly. there is nothing more scary than placing your foot on a ledge no wider than a centimeter and feeling your feet slipping around inside your shoe. talk about a major sphincter check. plus climbing shoes are designed to place the toes in the most powerful position to allow for adequate stepping and their soles are made of sticky soft rubber so slippage is minimized. going barefooted may seem logical, but stepping on sharp points of rock and placing all your weight on it can be excuriatingly painful. plus, sweaty feet equals slippery feet. there are large numbers of climbing shoes that are quite affordable as well. look at brands like mad rock, evolv, mammut, or search websites like REI.com. ive seen shoes as cheap as 50 to 60 dollars…..about the same cost as running shoes…..if youre going to climb regularly, this is the best advice i can give you, from one climber to another…good luck and aloha
