Don’t get me wrong, he’s a very gifted person. But the way I see his free soloing is in a ‘gimmicky’ light. There are probably hundreds of other people capable of doing what he is doing, they’re just smart enough to know that when it goes wrong, you’re dead. It’s not macho to die. I don’t think he does it to feel like that (macho, I mean), I just think that’s the way his new-found fans portray him. Which is a shame, and really takes away from the essence of his climbing. Sorry to have a go.
well i can’t really speak like i have any real knowledge of climbing, because i’m merely an observer, not an actual climber. but have u seen his 60 minutes special? those walls seem pretty fuckin gnarly. spots in the wall where he is past 90 degrees, and it looks literally superhuman. i’m not diminishing the rest of the climbing world, i just think that his ability to do it with no ropes on crazy walls puts him in a class of mental toughness that is seldom seen. but again, i’m only a fanatic
the fails you saw are performed by either terrible climbers or crazy climbers.
Your obviously not a climber then. Risks of the sport, as in any sport. Rather die doing something we love! Whats life if your wrapped up in cotton wool buds hiding under your bed all the time?

Eurgh.. Alex is really impressive, yes. But he’s not free soloing walls of this standard. Just because he solos big walls (most of which are not at all demanding) doesn’t diminish the rest of the climbing community–especially the upper echelons of which–that are beasting out new 5.15s every day. Don’t forget that when you slag everyone else of as if they’re scared. Yup, he has big brass balls, but will never be a truly world class climber, hence the soloing.

everytime i heard these guys say how scary it is or how sketchy it is, all i think is ALEX HONNOLD. guy does it with no ropes. he’s a beast amongst men.
Putting your life at risk for feeling good or showing off will never be a sound decision. It seems always to be “worse it” to people who do not care much for anything else but themselves. And obviously do not risk their life on any “really” important mission. So consequently, when they loose life in the process humanity has lost nothing.
