The limb walkers were great. Thin guys with climbing gear and all sorts of man-toys. They tickled the bark, bopped all around the giant tree, cut deadwood and put in a high-strength wire to prevent possible future dislimberment. Two climbed and two fetched and chipped. And, best yet, they complemented the tree. You can tell it’s feeling good about itself. Cared for and proud to be a tree, and – who knows what goes on in its soul… And the Limbwalkers say they use veggie oil in their vehicles, but only 5% veggie diesel in the chipper. Sounds like they pay too much for their oil, though. Surprising. Anyway, hope you enjoy the music too.
The Auto Extraction Search and Rescue team performed some hands-on training Thursday that entailed rescuing a ‘patient’ by hauling him up a steep embankment using a rescue basket, a winch and climbing gear.

Entry from: Pokhara, Nepal Entry Title: “Pokhara and trek to Poon Hill” Entry: “Arrived in Nepal – Pokhara, around 2am Monday morning. It was a back breaking journey which totalled over 14 hours. We made a detour to the sight of Buddha’s birthplace in Lumbini and then carried on into the mountains to reach our oasis of calm. Pokhara is one of the most beautiful places i’ve been to and comes with a welcomed cooler climate. Planning a week here with hikes into the hills, mountain biking and kyaking around the lake. On sunday we will start a three day trek to Poon Hill; one of the best viewing points of the Annapurna Himalaya they say (whoever they are). The plan for the trek is: Day 1: Naya Pul to Ghandrung (14km) Day 2: Ghandrung to Ghorepani (26km) Day 3: Ghorepani to Poon Hill (5am). After breakfast, back to Naya Pul (22km) Tuesday 20th October The last three days was possibly the toughest challenge I have ever put my body through. Joe and I were expecting an easy first day but this proved anything but. We climbed and climbed for this supposive short 14km. We saw local farmers carrying huge bags, sherpas carrying trekkers backpacks who hadn’t thought of leaving it back at their hotel for some reason, and other sherpas carrying climbing gear of people going to much higher places than us. That night …

In 1987 Lara and I were visiting her Aunt and Uncle in Ohio and her kite got caught in a tree. I took the opportunity to ham it up for Lara’s benefit. Because I didn’t bring my climbing gear I free climbed the Maple tree to rescue Lara’s kite. I’d never attempt that now, but in those early days I was young and foolish.
